From one family owned business to another
Massarella Catering Group is a family owned business with a rich heritage. 150 years ago Giovanni Massarella and his brothers decided to leave Italy and search for a better life for their family in the UK.
The brothers founded a successful catering business that is still in operation today. It is now managed by fourth and fifth generation members of the Massarella family. The Massarella Catering Group specialises in retail catering for cafes and restaurants, with over 100 sites nationwide.
Massarella have worked with Tchibo Coffee Service – also a family owned business – for just under two years. Daniela Massarella, Marketing Director, says that coffee is now at the forefront of their operation due to their work with Tchibo.
Time for change
Massarella decided to change their coffee supplier about three years ago as their previous provider was mainly a coffee roaster. As their business grew, Massarella felt they needed to find a coffee supplier that could offer more than just a great product; they needed a full training and service package to make sure their business didn’t get left behind in an increasingly competitive coffee market.
Key coffee objectives
Aside from serving great coffee, Massarella’s key objectives from their coffee partnership were:
▶ Regular barista training
▶ Quarterly mystery shops
▶ Quarterly coffee and equipment quality audits
▶ To develop passionate baristas
Right from the initial roll-out, it’s clear that Tchibo had a positive impact and helped Massarella along the way to achieve their goals. Almost two years later, Daniela says “previously our food was our main USP, but coffee is definitely at the forefront of our operation now and a lot of that is due to the change in supplier to Tchibo. It’s given us more focus.”
Since the partnership began, Tchibo Coffee Service have held over 400 staff training sessions, completed 1000 mystery shops and 1000 coffee and equipment quality audits. Daniela says “We are delighted with the service that we’ve had so far. Our account team are absolutely brilliant. The trainers all over the country have been very responsive. There’s obviously genuine passion in your business and in our business to improve our coffee.”
